Third-Party Syndicated Content Boosts SEO and CX
Most marketers know they can syndicate their website content, such as blog posts, by making it available for publication on other websites. Various services are available to help you do this. Some are free (e.g., Medium), and some are PPC (e.g., Outbrain). When successful, these efforts build backlinks to the content on your site, enhancing SEO and site traffic.
But what about the reverse, where you publish relevant syndicated content from third parties on your website? Sure, a constant stream of self-generated content is excellent, but very difficult and costly to achieve. This is where third-party content comes in. You augment your stream of content with outside syndicated material. When well-executed, you enhance SEO and site traffic and improve the customer’s experience (CX).
The Buyer’s Journey
Let’s look at the issue from the customer’s perspective. In general terms, the buyer’s journey has three phases: problem and opportunity recognition, alternative definition and evaluation, and purchase.
Very often, companies focus their content on the second phase by describing product features and benefits. Perhaps they go even further by comparing their products to competitors. This type of content is helpful … when the buyer is in the second phase of their journey.
But what if buyers are in the first phase of their journey? Then their needs are not met, and they have a frustrating buying experience on your site.
One way to remedy the problem is to write content that helps buyers think through their situation more generally. For example:
- Provide points of view on broad business trends that relate to your products.
- Describe use cases that describe problems or opportunities you have solved or addressed in various industries.
The problem with early-phase, company-generated content, though, is bias. Buyers assume it represents points of view that favor the company.
When you offer perspectives written by outsiders on your website, you reduce the buyer’s tendency to view your content as biased. A mix of inside and outside authorship shifts the feel of your website. From the buyer’s perspective, you are now putting their needs first. You are serving their need for unbiased information by providing multiple and diverse sets of views.
Yes, But …
Some of the most common objections to third-party content include:
- Quality: What if the outside content is poorly written?
- Distraction: Can it distract buyers from embracing our point of view?
- Diversion: Does it take people away from our site?
Syndicated Content Quality Management
While there are multiple tools for managing syndicated content quality, it is too easy to get the cart before the horse. Quality management should start with … you guessed it … the buyer. Who are your buyers? What jobs do they need to do in the early phases of their journeys? When you know the answers to these questions, you can then design a syndicated content strategy that delivers high-quality information for your buyers.
Once you know what content serves your buyers, you can calibrate your syndicated content feeds to align with those needs. For example, you can restrict your feeds to keywords that are especially attractive to your buyers, or to sources or authors held in high regard.
You Can’t Manage Buyers
Stop trying to manage buyers! You will fail, so don’t even bother. The internet is so rich with information that your buyers will find alternative perspectives, with or without your help. So why not help them, and build goodwill along the way?
When you provide content with multiple perspectives, you do two things. First, you give buyers what they are looking for. Second, you force yourself to achieve high content standards that sufficiently offset alternative perspectives.
This does not mean you should flood your website with content that contradicts your point of view. Instead, it means you should allow a dose of high-quality content that provides different perspectives. Remember: diverse content is already out there, and buyers will find it, so why fight a losing battle? Instead, serve the buyer’s needs, and you will reap the rewards.
Let Them Go … They’ll Be Back
When you provide buyers with links to high quality, syndicated content, you are increasing the likelihood they will leave your site. This is true, but only in the moment. The wise digital marketer remembers their job is to win the customer and make a sale, not maximize session duration. Remember: Buyers can simply return to the prior tab on their browser to continue browsing your site.

When you serve customers useful content, they respond. The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is one example. Studies show that an industry’s NPS leader tends to outgrow its competitors by a factor of two.
During the buyer’s journey, one of the most valuable things a company can do is provide useful content. Our clients often improve their Google search rankings on important keywords simply by providing relevant syndicated content on their websites.

How to Unlock Powerful Marketing Insights?
The Holy Grail of modern marketing is delivering the right message at the right time for the right audience. And it may be more attainable than ever when you approach it through the lens of digital ecosystem marketing.
Phil Kotler and Christian Sarkar explain in their latest Marketing Journal article that ecosystem marketing is about understanding your market as a network of participants and being able to influence the right actors at the right time.
Ecosystem marketing is not a new framework. What is new is being able to create rich, actionable ecosystem maps from the wealth of digital data that is already at our fingertips.
Modern Milkshake Marketing
Let’s take a look at this digital ecosystem approach by contrasting it to Clay Christensen’s widely respected “milkshake marketing” research.
McDonald’s wanted to sell more milkshakes. Despite continuous product improvement, the burger brand could not figure out how to entice customers to consume more of the frozen beverages. Sales remained level.
The problem was that McDonald’s was focused on the product—not the job customers would hire the milkshake to complete. As it turns out, McDonald’s milkshakes were not just competing with other milkshakes from Burger King and Wendy’s. They were competing in a wider market of bananas, bagels, donuts—even Snickers bars—to fill the job of spicing up an otherwise boring commute to work while keeping hunger at bay for the remainder of the morning.

With this knowledge of the job customers were trying to complete and the wider market they were trying to complete it in, McDonald’s was able to change their strategy and messaging to improve milkshake consumption.
The problem is that uncovering this invaluable insight required someone to stand at McDonald’s for 18 hours and take detailed notes on each milkshake customer:
- What time of day did they purchase a milkshake?
- What were they wearing when they bought a milkshake?
- Were they alone or with other people?
- Did they buy other food with the milkshake?
- Did they drink it in the restaurant or take it to their car and leave?
After determining that about half of milkshake customers came alone, before 8:30 am, wearing work attire, and left the restaurant with milkshake in hand, the team had to do more in-person research, asking milkshake buyers WHY they had decided on a milkshake at that point in time.
Arduous. Time-consuming. Resource-intensive.
But mapping digital ecosystems is readily accessible.
Applying Business Ecosystem Theory to the Web
We all use the internet to seek out solutions to our problems just about every day. We search, and then we visit sites that we think might provide useful resources. Sometimes we end up buying something online (probably not a milkshake).
All of this searching and visiting and buying leaves a digital trail of breadcrumbs that’s available for marketers to follow and learn from. Using a variety of web crawling technologies and algorithms, we can collect and organize these breadcrumbs into maps of the digital ecosystems our brands are operating in. We can understand and visualize the answers to questions like:
- What are people that buy our products and services searching for online?
- Where do they end up online after searching?
- How many clicks does it take them to get there?
- Do they end up making a purchase?
The ecosystem maps generated from this data help us to understand the jobs our customers are trying to complete with our products or services. They also give us a deep understanding of the conversations that are occurring about these challenges or jobs, where they are occurring, and the language people use to describe these challenges.
For example, a high-end retail brand may find that likely customers are searching with terms like “professional looks to stand out without looking flashy” and that they often end up making purchases on a single competitor’s website. The solution could be creating highly visible wardrobe suggestions and outfits tailored to this need and marketing them with related language.

Of course, this is an obvious assumption. The brilliance of collecting and visualizing the actual data is that the results may be completely different than what you expect them to be.

This digital version of ecosystem marketing is brand spanking new. Results may still feel a little bit magical. The agencies that can accurately compile digital maps today are pioneering in the space, continuing to optimize both their technologies and their interpretations of the resulting maps.

Do Your Content Pages Woo?
Considerable effort is often exerted to design marketing content that assists buyers through their journeys. But far less attention is paid to the sign-up boxes, page links and other offers that surround all of that great content on the content page. If not approached with care, these offers can seem out of sync to the customer and diminish the impact of your great content.
Rather than design content page offers that woo and tie to journeys, marketers tend to revert to old-school habits. They brashly present CTAs (calls to action) that can seem abrupt, premature and self-serving to a web page visitor. It is almost as if the marketer is thinking: “Since I’ve added great content value, now it’s time to pop the question.”
Our experience says whoa! Don’t be so proud of your content. It might be good, but that does not mean you can jump to “My place or yours?”
While we don’t advocate playing hard to get on your website, we find it far more effective to accept the fact that buyer journeys often involve long, drawn-out digital courtships. The odds are high that a given visitor is in the first 80% of their journey rather than near its conclusion. Marketers must keep this in mind and present a variety of content page offers, most of which lead to additional insightful content rather than push to close the deal or schedule a sales appointment.
Marketers might rationalize brash content page CTAs with:
- “They can use the NAV bar if they want more content.”
- “We are under intense pressure to deliver results.”
- “We must push for the close. As they say in sales, follow the ‘ABCs” (always be closing).”
- “Asking for a sales appointment is gentler than presenting an order form.”
Use OFAs, Not CTAs
The root of the problem is this: the very concept of a CTA is company-centric. It focuses on what the company wants, not the customer. What customers want are Offers of Further Assistance or “OFAs”. Replacing CTAs with OFAs brings the marketer back in line with being customer-centric and making offers that align with buyer journeys.
Another type of “content transgression” that seldom woos is the “address-for-download” (AFD) offer. Many marketers think they should get an email address (and sometimes even a phone number) from the prospect before they share their “premium” content such as an extensive whitepaper. “Why give it away for free?”
The AFD approach is out-of-sync with the Era of Consent. True, you are asking for a simple exchange of value: an email address for a content piece. But marketers must embrace the fact that buyers now have tremendous power in most transactions. They always have options. If you do not offer free content, someone else will. Or, if the prospect gives you an email address, they can still:
- Give you a bogus email address or phone number.
- Unsubscribe from your mailing list.
- Flag your URL or follow-up emails as spam.
- Block your follow-up phone number on their phones.
Play the Long Game
When the marketer steps back and considers the whole picture for a moment, they realize that loading content pages with aggressive CTAs is not in sync with the times. Of course you want the website visitor’s email address. But you need to earn it. You need to help the buyer move to the point where they want you to have their email address. This type of patience is a core success requirement in the Era of Consent. In other words, marketers must be “consentric”. Court the prospect. Make it easy for them to move along their purchase journey. But shun heavy-handedness.
The Omnichannel Buyer’s Journey: Who Does It Well?
While the industry continues to witness the fall of more traditional retailers (most recently, Sears), there are some key bright spots in the retail market.
According to Forrester, the projected growth rate for pure digital purchases in 2018 is $48 billion. The projected growth rate of in-store purchases that begin digitally is $69 billion. From a hard dollar standpoint, the largest dollar growth is from people starting their buyer’s journey online and then buying in a physical store.
But the majority of retail brands still approach digital and brick and mortar as their own channel silos, designing experiences for each independently of each other. This creates inconsistencies, annoyances and other roadblocks for customers as they navigate between the two, resulting in a sub-optimal customer experience.
Now add mobile to the mix (which eMarketer predicts will represent 74% of digital ad spending by 2020), and the situation is complicated further. Google has concluded that mobile consumers move through their journeys in spurts rather than sessions, and that the “micro-moment” is the new battlefield where brands achieve success or failure.
Being customer-centric is not just about doing digital well and doing mobile well and doing the in-store experience well—it’s about understanding these channels together and how they must interact to allow the customer to direct her own buyer’s journey.
Thankfully for consumers, some brands are getting it right, and they are the brands seeing continued growth (in spite of the supposed “retailpocalypse”). Here are a few examples.
Best Buy Invented Omnichannel
In The History of Omni-channel blog series, author Nikki Baird explains:
“…I think a lot of people forget or lose sight of the fact that omni-channel didn’t begin as omni-channel, or even cross-channel. It began as Customer Centricity. And the retailer who should get credit for putting Customer Centricity on the map is Best Buy.”
Best Buy gets the credit for the birth of omnichannel marketing and customer centricity because the company understands the critical linkage between digital, mobile and physical experiences. Integration of these channels puts the customer in the driver’s seat—lets customers shop how they want to shop—in a more traditional, linear approach to a purpose or through spurts of activities characterized by micro-moments.
Many customers may want to do their initial research online and then visit the store to check out products, ask questions of the Blue Shirts and complete the transaction. But there are also customers that would rather have their TV delivered to their home after transacting in store (instead of lugging that thing out themselves). Some customers want the television NOW—they research options on their mobile app, choose a nearby store with inventory, transact within the app, then pick up within an hour at the store. Others check out products in store, while also comparing reviews and transacting on their mobile.
Best Buy’s mobile app encourages visitors to incorporate your local store into your buyer’s journey.
Buyer’s journeys are as unique as the individuals completing them, and Best Buy was one of the first brands to figure out the need to enable all of them seamlessly, for a customer-centric, omnichannel experience.
Casper Reinvents Mattress Shopping
Bed-in-a-box retailer Casper was born as a digital company, but the brand has seen so much success that they recently announced the opening of 200 physical stores.
Casper’s digital experience is excellent, providing educational materials in a variety of formats, including text, video, customer reviews. But if you have questions, there’s a chat feature, as well as the option to text with the brand. Both get you a prompt response from a real human that seems to have access to relevant information about your experience thus far. After making a purchase, Casper sends a text message confirmation and tracking information. Got a question? Someone will text you back. Decide to return your mattress? You can do that through text or chat, too.
For those that really need to try before they buy a mattress, Casper invites online visitors to “schedule a nap” at one of their physical locations. The nap experience is completely different than a traditional mattress shopping experience, allowing visitors to kick off their shoes and get comfy on beds in semi-private rooms. Sales associates are there purely to answer questions and assist customers, not sell. You can buy a bed at the location if you’d like and take it home that day, but most buyers go back online to order at their leisure.
From text messaging to nap rooms, the variety of features and experiences Casper has implemented make it easy for consumers to accomplish what they what to, throughout the buyer’s journey, in the channels they choose to interact in.
Bonobos Helps Associates Help Customers
The Bonobos mobile app is one of the most useful clothing apps I’ve ever used. It offers to help you “dress for the weather” using your real-time location, suggests full outfits based on the kind of clothing you’re in the market for, and allows you to save a closet full of clothes you’ve already purchased to reference when making new purchases. Got a question? One click opens your email client to ask a one of their customer service “ninjas.”
Both the Bonobos mobile app and the brand’s website (where you can speak with those ninjas via chat seven days a week) encourage visitors to make an appointment to visit the store. Visitors can make appointments for wardrobe overhauls, quick fittings and for grooms’ shop fittings, all featuring one-on-one attention to help you find just what you’re looking for.
The best part of the Bonobos experience? You can start shopping online, and when you subsequently make an appointment to visit a store, the store associate can review your profile (style, preferences, sizing, etc.) to make the best possible recommendations when you arrive.
Now, that’s some omnichannel integration.

Allow Customers to Direct Their Own Journeys
What brands like Best Buy, Casper and Bonobos understand is brick-and-mortar retail is not dead. Physical stores play an important role at certain stages of the buyer’s journey. Retail locations that create experiences that cater to customer needs at these stages of the journey are valuable to the customer and increase ROI—rather than eating away at profits as a financial liability as more traditional retailers have experienced.
But all three of these brands have not only mastered an individual channel or two, they have mastered connecting them together to benefit the customer. They allow and encourage customers to direct their own buyer’s journey, removing roadblocks, inconsistencies and other annoyances to provide a truly customer-centric, omnichannel experience.
So much for that “retailpocalypse.”
